Radon measurement and radon measures in Oslo and the surrounding area.

The requirement applies to all types of rental housing, both those rented by the public, businesses and private, including apartments and apartments in connection with their own housing. Institutions etc. are also included if the residents pay rent.

Radon-reducing measures must be implemented in rental housing, kindergartens, schools, etc. which is covered by Regulation 1 December 1995 No. 928 on environmental health protection in schools, kindergartens, etc. § 2, if the radon level exceeds 100 Bq / m3.

Radon is a very harmful gas and the leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. In Norway, there are approx. 300 cases of lung cancer deaths due to radon.

Radon gas emits alpha radiation that can damage living cells so they can develop into cancer cells. The gas can seep into all types of buildings via floors, walls, windows and water taps, showers, etc. Radon is a colorless and odorless radioactive gas found naturally in all bedrock, and can occur in water and building material.

The Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority recommends radon measurement every 5 years. In addition, this should be done with ownership change, renovation, changes in relation to ventilation and heating systems. Norway is among the countries in the world with the highest concentration of radon in indoor air.

The City of Oslo and the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority recommend that all homeowners carry out measurements of radon.
